about

This is a collection of a few TV Theme tunes that I decided to use as a springboard for a) Variations and b) Re-Voicing.

My aims with this project were several but simply put, I wanted the chance to play within these wonderful pieces of music. In each case, I took the beginning or recognizable parts and then spun off into variations. Somewhat like you what you may hear as incidental music inside an episode.

In every case, as I dipped into the score for the original, I was amazed at the cleverness of the technique in creating such drama, whimsey, grandness & playfulness in what are easily dismissed as not really proper music because they are themes for TV shows.

I have also provided a second version where I have really tried to step away from the initial voicings and feel of the track whilst still paying homage to the original composition. Some versions you may think horrifying, but this is me playing. I can do that can't I?

The only theme I really wanted to do but didn't was Foyle's War also by Jim Parker. Two reasons; it is my favorite of the lot and I have already borrowed ideas a couple of times before.

There are two original tracks in the middle to serve as breathers (sonic gelato). They sprung from tutorial work I was doing at the same time.

Benedict Roff-Marsh Brisbane, Australia

Trained as a Mix Engineer in the late 80's in a tape-based studio making AM Radio jingles. It taught me to deliver and focus on the right result instead of messing about for days over whether 234ms or 243ms was more socially acceptable. I noticed that everyone was a bit afraid of the electronics. Composing helped me understand how to mix better. ... more
