about

The album title is from the Japanese garden in Berlin of the same name. As I began writing, I had two ideas: the Berlin School of composing & a Zen garden. Initially, I couldn't;t see how they might connect. I wondered at doing another "Berlin to Dusseldorf" album only this time Berlin to Tokyo. It's cute, Tangerine Dream to Yellow Magic Orchestra, and all that.

I realized though that music wasn't the glue here but an actual place could be. I Googled Japanese garden in Berlin and there it was: Garden of Merging Waters. I used images to help shape the pieces.

The album is a spiritual journey as expressed by parts of the garden.

The album became a double when I completed an out-take called "Taro Tone" - named after the founder of the Japanese synth manufacturer Roland. I realized early on that this was not an album track but I wanted to finish it. I then tried a process I had heard about. I stretched the track by a factor which took the piece of audio under 5-minutes and turned it into 49-minutes! I wanted to make something of that so I cut it into two and added more parts over the top. You can hear these tracks on my YouTube. These 3 tracks are included as BONUS material with purchase. Like them or not as you will.

Purchase supports me directly and includes "Merging Waters I & II" plus the bouncy "Taro Tone" tracks.

Benedict Roff-Marsh Brisbane, Australia

Trained as a Mix Engineer in the late 80's in a tape-based studio making AM Radio jingles. It taught me to deliver and focus on the right result instead of messing about for days over whether 234ms or 243ms was more socially acceptable. I noticed that everyone was a bit afraid of the electronics. Composing helped me understand how to mix better. ... more
